Many of our neighbours in Sutton took part and decorated their houses and homes in red, white and blue over the bank holiday weekend of 8th-10 May 2020. This was a wonderful opportunity to grow our sense of community and together mark the end of the great struggle in Europe, although not quite the end of the war. As part of the celebrations we staged a colouring in competition and had special poster printed that were delivered to everyone who requested one.
As part of the national campaign to celebrate VE Day we also encouraged all those taking part to undertake the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ at 3pm on the 8th May. We did this from the safety of our own homes by standing up and raising a glass of refreshment and undertook the ‘Toast’ :
“To those who gave so much, we thank you,”
This was a unique opportunity to pay tribute to the many millions at home and abroad that gave so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.
